Woman Experiments With Tradition On Thanksgiving!

Holy Crap! Never, ever get creative with traditional dishes on Thanksgiving. Bryan and I were grocery shopping at Costco for all our Thanksgiving fixings. Generally, their products are dependable and quite tasty with the exception of their mashed potatoes which can serve as road patch. And now, add their dressing to the short but offensive list. Absolutely disgusting! Soggy croutons comes to mind as a fitting description. I'm returning to Stove Top! May not be fancy or made from scratch, but when serving dinner to family and friends, consistency means more to me than bragging rights. (Ok, so I'm slightly lazy? Or maybe I can pass for harried. Yeah, I like harried better than lazy - lol.)

Thanksgiving Mayhem

I've lived in Canada for 25 yrs, now. I still cannot put my finger on the pulse of Thanksgiving here.
One would think it possible to acclimate to a new date and time for a familiar celebration but, no. Not for this girl. Seriously, it just sneaks up on me. Americans celebrate in late November and, regardless of how many reminders I jot down or how many calendars I highlight, it just feels tooooooo early!
It reminds me of the behavior studies on human sleep patterns. Deprived of light and all time telling devises, the human body sinks itself into a bio-rhythm that hums along quite methodically without the help of sun, moon, stars and watches as previously believed. Well, my gobble-rhythm is set to the American clock and it appears it shall remain so.
What is it they say? You can take the girl out of the States but you can't take the States out of the girl! Well, put. Anyway, we did make it to the grocery store today where we purchased all the necessary wares to provide a decent Thanksgiving meal for our small clan. Our house is upside-down with the renovations still underway and we will have to shift a few things around to make more room, but I am quite certain a fun family time will be had by all.

To all my friends and family on the road during this holiday season - Drive safe and God's speed. And remember to remember all your many blessings. It could be so much worse and there is always something for which to be grateful. God bless you all.

The "Nobel" No Longer Nobel

What the heck? When I think of the Nobel Peace Prize, I think of Mother Teresa. To put Obama in the same class as proven, selfless humanitarians is an insult. Of course I should not be too surprised. They did give one to Al Gore, didn't they? Sorry, but based on these last two selections, the Nobel selection committee have failed to ring true with me. It has become nothing more than a blatant popularity contest. The committee said they awarded the prize to Obama because of his well publicized intentions. Give me a break!
Bryan informed me that former Pres. Reagan was a nominee for his key participation in the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Now that is a thing to be awarded!

On behalf of the human race, my apologies, Mother Teresa and company.

Puppy Mill Hits Too Close To Home

Criminal Minds is an excellent program. The actors are stellar and most of the plots are well constructed with many surprise twists and unexpected resolutions. But my favorite aspect of the show is the monologues. Bits at the beginning, middle and end, the narration is poignant and often provides the connective link in an intelligent manner. Today, the episode began with, "Shakespeare said, 'Love all, trust a few and do harm to none'."

This struck me right between the eyes as I am currently trying to reconcile myself to the recent realization that I have a haunting connection to May Poon, the individual charged for running a puppy mill in West Edmonton, discovered April 1, 2009. I recall, very clearly, the sinking feeling I got when reading the articles and watching updates on the news. The address was suspiciously near the home of the breeder from whom we purchased 5 of our dogs. But as no names were forthcoming and an exact address was not provided, I attempted to put my doubts to bed.

Today, I received a call from an acquaintance made during the kids' dancing days, who informed me that both she and I had dogs from the infamous Edmonton Puppy Mill. My head started swimming and that familiar sinking feeling permeated throughout my gut. My suspicions had been correct. The offender's name was released in the Edmonton Journal today and my friend's husband pointed out the sad facts, in writing, to her. Knowing she had provided May's contact information to me when I had expressed our family's desire to get a dog like her sweet-natured red toy poodle, Shadow, she called me up to share the horrifying news.

Sadly, it all makes sense now. The long and sorrowful tale of our experience is too fresh, although more than 2 yrs past, to recall at this time. Suffice it to say, Roady remains close to me in his urn on my library chest. I know he understands that we did everything within our power to save both he and his sister. Olivia is still with us today after an entire year of nursing her back to health. Both puppies came to us with a terrible case of Parvo Virus. It took us over 18 months to receive our refund for Roady and there was no offer to help pay the $4,800.00 charge that went on our Master Card.

For now, I look at Sadie, Tucker, William and Olivia with new-found gratitude. Having known them and loved them, I wouldn't have wanted a life without them. I am comforted with the knowledge that, because we brought them home at 6 and 7 wks old (not my professional recommendation as a dog trainer!), they were spared the horrible treatment received by less fortunate animals that remained in her care for a lengthier time. My heart aches deeply for the breeder dogs who spend years, perhaps, living in cramped quarters with minimal care and attention. This behavior is criminal without doubt.

If you would like to learn more about this particular case of animal cruelty that occurred under our very noses, go to edmontonjournal.com and search May Poon. She will appear before the court in late October 2009 to face 8 charges of animal cruelty which could potentially carry a fine of $20,000.00 per charge. The court is also expected to restrict her from every owning another animal.

The MOST EXCELLENT NEWS OF ALL... each of the dogs seized from the puppy mill have since been treated for all their medical issues, spayed or neutered, rehabilitated and adopted out to loving families.

To say I feel duped is an understatement. I am, one minute, berating myself for trusting one person too many and the next, thanking the good Lord that we, although inadvertently, were able to rescue 4 precious little creatures from a dreary existence.

My parting words on this topic? Go, and do harm to none.

Oh, George!

This is George. She is a purebred boxer pup I have been working with for the past 6 wks. She was only 3 months old when we started (at the time of this pic). I saw her for her final session tonight. It has been 2 wks since last I saw her and, wow, she has grown. I estimate 2 inches in height. Look at those paws! She is the biggest sweetheart ever and I have grown very fond of her. I gave her a stuffie as a parting gift - a purple flower with a squeaker in it. I know how she loves her stuffies. I also got to play with her tonight as I demonstrated how to play the recall game and hide-and-seek. She absolutely loved it.
Lana and Curtis have been incredibly diligent in their efforts and are so dedicated to their little girl they are sure to gain all the benefits from the training. This isn't good bye, though. They will call me when they get their treadmill so I can introduce Georgie to that exercise and once they have a few weeks to practice all they have learned, they want me to come back to address beginner obedience. I can't wait. It has been a pleasure working with them. If I can get my fitness center up and running, I know they would participate. They took some great shots tonight and will be sending them to me in the next couple days. Be well, Georgie. You're a keeper, that's for sure! Hugs and belly scratches from me!

Dogs, Weight and Weddings

Met the nicest people yesterday during an inspection I was doing for Homes By Avi. Glenn and Susan. They have three little dogs: Maltese, Yorkie and Shitzu cross. They said they would call me once they get settled as they need help addressing some issues.
It's great to meet such genuine people. Sometimes, they can be real bags. I have another inspection tomorrow morning at 9am. I better get to sleep so I can stay awake that early. I'm usually just rolling out of bed at that time. Uh, oh. My secrets out now. lol.

Update on my Dr. Bernstein diet...I lost 4.2 lbs since my weigh in on Monday the 6th. I weigh in again tomorrow so I don't expect more than another 1/2 lb or so. But, come Tuesday, I should be another 5 lbs lighter. I just have to make sure I DO NOT eat too much over the Thanksgiving wknd. I already dreading it but I only have 16 more days until Logan's wedding. At the very most, I will be 12 lbs lighter. I am trying to do pilates and walk every day. This weather sucks for walking, though. Hope it gets better for a bit. Maybe I'll have to do stairs!

What A Load Of Crap!

So, the offer did not go well. The vendors countered at full list. Apparently, they have been speaking with a fellow who is telling them that the place is worth 2 million. Their realtor asked them how they figured they could get 2 million when they can't even get an offer for 1 million. They informed him that they were not interested in selling if they do not get the full listing price of 1.5 million.

This means that we are going to continue looking for a place as close in as possible. I was speaking to a business acquaintance who informed me that she had booked her dogs in at Bero Kennels but had to cancel when the in-laws changed their minds about having company and decided to come to Sherwood Park, instead. When she called Bero to inform them of the change in plans, he actually yelled at her : some nonsense about supporting your local businesses. She said he was extremely off-putting. You think? Whatever. I can't let this hitch deter me from my goal. I now have a viewing scheduled for a 40 acre parcel on RR221. That's pretty close. Better than RR 210. It has a 3,200 sq ft Quonset on it that would be perfect to modify into a kennel and fitness center. They also have a 6 stall barn and a 2 stall barn so I could also have a few horses. We'll see. I'll keep you posted. Until then - isn't this boxer cute? He feels my pain; shoveling a load of shit! lol
